“The difficulty lies not so much in developing new ideas as in escaping from old ones.”
—John Maynard Keynes
John Maynard Keynes was a British economist whose ideas introduced in the 1930s fundamentally changed the theory and practice of the economic policies of governments. He spent years refining and promoting what became a new standard for stabilizing the world economy.
To Accept a New Idea, You Must Release the Old
He faced the same issue all innovative individuals have faced over centuries: the difficulty in promoting new, fresh, and effective ideas. The problem is that I am not gaining interest in the new idea so much. It’s more about people’s reluctance to release their attachment to old concepts and beliefs. The new way may sound good, but when it’s time to do it, that’s a different story. Without even realizing it, we’re facing the fear of being taken out of our comfort zone. We fear accepting change.
How often have we read about a new way of living, watched an enlightening program on PBS, or were told by a friend about a radical new way to view life and live it to its fullest? You become excited. You can see your path toward peace, love, money, fame, and more! This is what you’ve been looking for. You jump in with both feet and begin the path that will bring you all your life’s desires. How did that work for you? If you’re in the majority—like 99% of us—probably not so well. No matter how good it sounds, moving out of your comfort zone is still a struggle.
How to Begin the Task of Making a Change
So, what will help you release your attachment to your old ways and acquire new habits? Begin by controlling your thoughts – believe in yourself. Start the process with small steps. Nothing enhances confidence more than achieving a goal – even if it’s a sub-goal to a more comprehensive desire. Each success factor will supply the motivation to proceed to the next step. You will soon know you can learn and become comfortable changing your methods and approaching a new and better way. When you accomplish this, you will become open to learning how the new way works and why it will help you.
