Dreams – we all have them. Material things we want (car, home.) Experiences we desire (travel, learning to ski, fly an airplane.) Friends, romantic relationships, the ideal job – we all have at least some of these. But most of us struggle to make our dreams come true. Why the struggle? It’s because most of us have never been shown what steps to take to make our dreams come true.
Well, today is your lucky day! I will show and explain all the steps you need to take to achieve your goals.
Make sure the dream is yours
We are all advised about what we should be striving for. It can come from friends, family, parents, teachers, employers, etc. Before you begin putting energy into obtaining these ‘goals,’ make sure they are yours. Take some time to think about these objectives. How do you really feel about them? Be honest with yourself. I know you may be under great pressure, but if you are not excited by the thought of achieving them, stop right there. Whatever effort you put into them will be wasted.
Is this what you really want?
Even if this goal is not forced upon you, it is important to take some time to reflect on how you will feel when you achieve it. Are you excited about the prospect of walking into your new home? What about the excitement of your first flight as an airplane pilot? Don’t rush this process. Take time to research what it will take to realize that dream. It may be a lot of work. Are you still excited?
Prioritize
What if, after you have completed the last few steps, you find that you have more than one or two dreams you wish to pursue? You need to rank them in order of importance. Trying to pursue more than one or two at a time will dilute. You won’t be able to put real energy into all of them simultaneously.
Some think it’s okay to work on multiple goals simultaneously as long as they involve the same general area of their lives. However, you still have the same problem: You will not be able to effectively put enough energy into all of them. Dividing focus reduces effectiveness.
You are ready to begin the process once you have completed the above tasks. Here are the necessary steps:
-
Visualize – again and again. Visualization empowers the mind. Take time each day to sit quietly and see how your life will be impacted when your dream arises. Be specific. The clearer you are on the details, the sooner things will happen.
- Spend time in meditation. Meditation is a wonderful and effective tool to aid you in this process. Spending time in a meditation session prior to your visualization time will make that process so much more effective. Don’t worry if you have never meditated before. It’s not complicated and well worth the effort.
- Examine your belief. Do you really believe that what you want is possible? By that, I mean it’s important to be honest with yourself. Let’s say your dream is to become the CEO of a multi-million-dollar company. But you are currently unemployed. If you really believe this is doable, then go with it. But it’s much more likely you know this is not a realistic target – at least not now. So, break it down into reasonable steps. You can change the goal to being hired for a good job with visibility within the company. Once that happens, set your sights to the next level. Each success will encourage you to keep going. And who knows – before long, it will be your picture on the cover of a Fortune 500 magazine!
- Monitor your feelings. As you see the dream coming, keep in touch with how you feel about it. It is possible that your feelings will shift. That would be a good time to reevaluate and decide whether to move on to something else. Again, meditation is a valuable tool in this process as well.
- Make your plans. Do your homework. Learn more about what you want and what you need to do. But don’t worry about having the resources you need. If you focus on a lack of resources, you are sabotaging yourself. Henry Ford said it perfectly: If you think you can or you think you can’t – you’re right! Just plan for success. If you stay there, the rest will take care of itself.
- Take action. Once you’ve made your plans, begin executing them. But remember that you will discover a need for corrections as you take each step. That doesn’t mean your plan is a failure. It means you are being guided to a better path.
- Speak with caution. You may want to share your goals and excitement. Some motivational trainers encourage this, but I suggest careful consideration. Some of the people you tell may be jealous because they fear your success will make them feel less important. They will try to discourage you by talking about all the reasons why you will fail. You don’t need that kind of energy. It’s okay to share, but be sure to only do so with those who really love you and genuinely want you to succeed.
What to expect once you have reached your goal
When you reach your goal, you are excited and happy. You want to share the news with the world. But all that energy doesn’t last forever. The excitement wears down. The “new thing” becomes just something else in your life. You may still enjoy it, but it falls into the background overall.
That’s not a bad thing. What would motivate you to move on to the next challenge if you didn’t lose some of that excitement? Every aspect of life has its opposite. After all, you can’t be excited if you are bored. Happiness has no meaning if you have not experienced sadness. Understanding this concept allows us to keep this change of feelings in perspective.
But wouldn’t it be nice to have that warm, happy feeling continue a little longer? There is a way. Take a good look at your next goal. Who benefits? Well, of course, you do. But does anyone else? What if your goal benefitted someone else – or possibly a whole group of people? That is the magic key.
When you bring joy to others, your joy lingers. The happiness you bring to others increases your happiness exponentially. You will still be motivated for your next adventure, but having that warmth remain within you would be nice.
Most Important Part!
Many follow through with all the suggestions above and more. Yet the dream never comes true, and some lose faith in the whole process.
There is nothing wrong with the process. It works every time. The problem is that many are not aware of the most important part. You must focus and see your goal as though it is already here – just waiting to be delivered. It’s not good enough to wish, want, hope, or even believe. Knowing is the key. To your subconscious mind, what you know to be true in your conscious mind is real. It then uses its unlimited power to deliver the goods!
Visualize what you want and keep it in your mind and heart. That’s how you make your dreams come true.
